Thou shalt not wear your makeup to bed
Let’s face it…we’re all guilty of doing this at one point or another and we’re all sick of hearing about it! But it genuinely is so important to take off your makeup before bed. Obviously a full cleanse, tone and moisturise is the ideal, but even removing your makeup with a wipe will do if you’re rolling into bed in the wee hours of the morning. We’ve both learned the hard way, with our skin protesting a few days later…it’s just not worth the thirty seconds you save by hitting the pillow make-up and all. Not to mention the ordeal of getting your facial imprint off your pillow the next morning!
Thou shall wash your makeup brushes regularly
This is another definite must for any makeup lover. Yes, it’s a pain in the ass having to wash your brushes (especially if you’re like us and own a sinful amount) but your makeup brushes are a breeding ground for dirt and bacteria. Plus after hearing the recent story about the poor girl who contracted a rare bacterial infection after using her friends’ foundation brush and was left paralysed, we’ve been keeping our brushes squeaky clean (yes, paranoia runs in the family!). Some baby oil and warm water, followed by swirling your brushes around some antibacterial soap will do the job – Sara uses a bar of soap and Claire prefers liquid.
Thou shall be kind to your hair
Excessive heat, styling and bleach do not make for a happy mane. Split ends, fuzz and dull hair are not good looks….ever. You don’t need to spend a fortune on hair products. There are some great budget buys that will keep your hair looking and feeling healthy. Sara’s must have is the John Frieda Frizz-Ease Heat Defeat Protective Styling Spray (available from Boots) that has a built in conditioner while Claire swears by Opal One Minute Treatment which she picked up for a few euro on her travels in Taiwan and is now hooked (I have my brother who’s moving home from there bringing a stockpile!). If you can’t make it to Taiwan over the weekend, it’s available online (on eBay or Bonjour HK)!
Thou shalt not be a makeup sheep
We all shamelessly copy makeup looks from YouTube goddesses (oh heeeeey Jaclyn Hill) only to realise we look nothing like them despite having followed them word for word and product for product. Be true to yourself when it comes to makeup and don’t feel you need to follow every new trend or wear what your favourite bloggers or your friends are wearing. What works on their skin may not work on yours! If you don’t like wearing too much makeup, you don’t need to contour like Kim K. Be adventurous and try out new colours and trends, but don’t feel like you HAVE to wear a certain look or product just because everyone else does!
Thou shalt not take tanning inspo from an Oompa Loompa
Oh the love between an Irish girl and her trusty bottle of tan…where would we be without it?! We both love having a year-round golden glow, but an orange glow is a HUUUUGE no-no. For some reason, too many Irish girls reach for the darkest shade they can go for, turning their alabaster skin an alarming radioactive shade of orange. Pick a shade that suits your natural skin tone…olive undertones are usually the most flattering for us.
Thou shall appreciate the dupe
As the name of the blog suggests, we are massive fans of a good dupe! We’re both shameless MAC addicts, but likewise, nothing excites us more than a fully stocked NYX or Wet ‘n’ Wild stand. When it comes to brands, experiment and don’t be a slave to any one brand. Just because it’s expensive, does not mean it’s fabulous and likewise, just because it’s cheap as chips, doesn’t mean it’s crap! We have a dupe series coming up soon, so keep an eye out for that…there are some AMAZING dupes to be had.
Thou shall drink GALLONS of water
An oldie but a goodie to finish up on! We all know we should be drinking a small river’s worth of water a day to get rid of toxins, keep our skin happy and generally stay healthy, but we know how difficult (and boring!) that can be! Try infusing your water with fruit or even herbal teas to add a little taste.
Thou shall always wear an SPF
UVA and UVB rays are the enemy! They can cause such damage to your skin, from aging to skin cancer. And it’s not just sunny days that you need to worry about, as no matter what the weather, those harmful rays are still there. La Roche Posay and Clarins do some fantastic facial sunscreens, which aren’t too oily so they won’t cause breakouts (Claire loves La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios cream, available from Boots).
Thou shall blend
There is very little worse than poorly blended make-up. There…we said it! A foundation line along your jaw and a sharp contour are not flattering on anyone. Blend, blend, blend like your life depends on it ladies.
Thou shall respect your brows
Over-plucked, overdrawn, over-squared, overdyed…the list of offences goes on and on. Sticking to your natural shape with your brows and a colour close to your hair colour are 2 good rules of thumb…it’s about enhancing what you have not painting on something totally different! If in any doubt, a good beautician can help you out with shaping, tinting and if you’re feeling a bit fancy, HD brows (which we both like to get done every now and then for a bit of maintenance in the brow area).
