Shearling Chic

It’s that time of year again. Crisp mornings, frosty evenings and just plain cold in between. Winter is here and it’s time to wrap up. I personally love this colder weather for the fact alone that adding a pair of ankle boots and a winter coat can make just about any outfit look effortlessly chic. There are so many different styles of jackets and coats available but today, we’re honing in on all things shearling.

Shearling coats have done the rounds for decades. Burberry have done it, Balmain have done it, Acne have done it, to name just a few.  Made iconic by British powerhouse Burberry, it’s a style that never goes out of fashion but sheepskin coats are bang on trend again this winter. If you’ve come into money, you can pick up a big-brand investment piece like Burberry’s Shearling Biker Jacket (Burberry, €3,795) but for most of us mere mortals, a high-street dupe will have to do. But fear not, this season has seen many high-street pieces that will last a lifetime and look like the real deal.

Oversized Aviator Jacket, €113, River Island

This version from River Island is simply beautiful. Still not cheap at €113, this jacket has to be seen to be appreciated. The faux fur lining is so soft you’ll be living in this all winter long. It has just enough hardware to look luxurious but isn’t overdone. River Island keep it simple and are on the money as always. This beauty is available in tan and black.

Faux Shearling Biker Jacket, €110, Topshop

Topshop always hit the mark when it comes to quality so I was very pleasantly surprised when I saw the price of one of this shearling jacket recently.  This jacket is a really nice weight – heavy enough to keep warm and cosy but it moves nicely so is practical for wearing day-to-day. The brushed suede effect gives it a very expensive look and I adore the khaki colour. It’s very different and gives a modern twist to the classic – a little more edgy and masculine.

Oversized Suede Effect Jacket, €99.95, Zara

This faux shearling jacket from Zara has caught Claire’s eye on a few occasions. For just under €100, this number nails the shearling trend, complete with sheepskin effect lining. This is a really heavy jacket so it’s ideal for the colder months ahead or if you’re travelling abroad for a winter escape or Christmas markets. Available in two different colours – the classic beige and also a very stylish light grey (referred to as ‘Sky Blue’ online). Make sure you grab this while it’s still available.

Faux Shearling Jacket, €40, Penneys

If you’re looking to emulate Burberry and co. this season and you’re on a tight budget, then skip down to your nearest Penneys, and quick! As always, Penneys tries its hand at another major trend and its versions of the shearling jacket don’t disappoint. We spotted two different styles in store this weekend, both €40 but still pretty good quality I must say! However, these items are sure to sell out rapidly so don’t delay!

The shearling look is on-trend at the moment but this is one fashion trend that comes around every couple of seasons so invest in one of these fabulous pieces and you’ll be holding onto it for years to come.
